A few years ago, a mutual friend introduced me to Giancarlo Bettinelli. Giancarlo is the son of Napa grape grower legend Larry Bettinelli, and they had recently acquired the Bettinelli Sleeping Lady Vineyard in the Yountville foothills.
Bettinelli Sleeping Lady Vineyard started as a country estate for gold rush-era San Franciscans and still feels like you should be riding up to the 1870s house on horseback. This west Yountville vineyard is named for the distinctive foothills behind the property, which look like a woman laying on her side.
The historic appearance of the property belies the innovation happening in the vineyard. Larry Bettinelli replanted the vineyards and invented a new trellis system that optimizes sun and air exposure for the clusters. His family is embracing new cutting edge technology that lets us track photosynthesis activity, vine stress levels, and phenolic evolution throughout the year. They grow six clones of Cabernet Sauvignon at Bettinelli Sleeping Lady Vineyard, and we work together on each year’s final blend.
Wines from this site are elegant and feminine. Floral notes, graphite, bright red fruits, finesse.
