I came to the Missouri Hopper Vineyard through Andy Beckstoffer. After years of collaborating on wines from Las Piedras and other Beckstoffer sites, I understood their farming and they understood my winemaking. Andy suggested I take a look at a vineyard along the southern edge of the Oakville AVA, because he thought the fruit would be a great match for my style. He was right.
Missouri Hopper was the vivacious and much-beloved youngest daughter of Charles Hopper, a Napa Valley pioneer who purchased land from George Yount before Yountville even existed. The vineyard that bears her name today was part of a 100-acre gift from her father, who first planted it to vine in 1873.
The Beckstoffers bought the vineyard in the 1990s and strategically replanted to optimize the benchland terroir. Located west of Highway 29, this site has deep gravel soils ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. We source from two blocks located in the southwestern portion near Vine Hill Ranch, where soils are especially deep and well-draining.
Prized for their ultra-silky tannins and luminous fruit, Missouri Hopper wines deliver opulence and energy in equal measure.
